I just heard that somewhere in the United States a man burst into a court room, threatened a judge with some knives and the officers shot and killed him. The man had a history of mental illness. Why'd the officers have to kill him? I guess he was so ill he's better of dead, huh? He could've been helped, he could've been humanly restrained and brought to a hospital and evaluated. He didn't have to be killed. Now he'll never have a second chance to live. Maybe his life was so scrambled he didn't want help, he just wanted out. I know that's how I feel sometimes. I wish I could sit by him wherever he is and give him a big hug. Well, it's too late for anything, I guess. But still, I don't like that they killed him. That's a crime. They shouldn't be awarded, they should have their guns taken away from them and be suspended without pay. They did the wrong thing. I don't know. I just don't like the whole situation. Nobody should be violent. Everybody should be calm. Nobody should have guns or knives to threaten or protect them. Weapons are bad. Well, I don't know. I do use a knife to scrape at my wrist every now and then...but I wouldn't use it on another person.

I sometimes feel the way you do when I see that someone was killed when it appears that maybe the person could have been stopped in some other way. If the man had a gun, then quick action must be taken or even more people could have been killed. But, with knives... it seems there could have been another way. Even if he had to be shot to stop him, shooting him in the hip or leg or shoulder would have stopped him...or slowed him down enough for someone to grab him and take control. Sometimes the knife might be too close or there might be a hostage being held as a shield...circumstances like that can change the possibilities, but sometimes I believe that death can be avoided.
Injuring a human being in any way, regardless of how slight or severe, is wrong unless it is in self-defense. But, even when in self-defense, the resulting injury (or death) may be wrong if what was done wasn't justified...meaning it wasn't necessary.
So, you have to be careful, too. When you scrape at yourself, you are injuring a human being. Even though you are doing it to yourself, it is still an injury being caused by a person. Nobody would see that as self-defense, just somebody who is a threat and has caused injury. It just isn't good or necessary to hurt or injure anybody like that, so it isn't good or necessary to hurt yourself.
